Over 80 young people from 20 districts across the country became part of the first edition of the ‘Model European Union Moldova’ initiative. They simulated the decision-making processes of key European institutions. From 12 to 14 April 2024, within the premises of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, these young participants engaged in debates on genuine legislative proposals from the agendas of prominent politicians, negotiated amendments to laws, and addressed citizens’ challenges by finding viable solutions.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

During the first edition of “Model EU Moldova”<\/a>, the youth divided into seven political groups, mirroring the composition of the current European Parliament. They acquainted themselves with the ideologies of the parties and their positions on the debated topics, formed political alliances, proposed strategies, and adopted legislative proposals from the agenda of Brussels politicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The topics proposed for plenary discussions focused on lowering the voting age to 16 and increasing youth civic participation, as well as media freedom and combating disinformation. The parliamentary sessions were covered by a group of young individuals acting as journalists from the most prominent media institutions in the European Union and Moldova.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Igor Grosu, the President of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, stated: “”Young people should play a direct role in what we call European integration. I encourage you to make the most of these days, ask questions, and gain insights into the processes and decision-making within the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

J\u0101nis Ma\u017eeiks, the Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova, commented, “Your active participation in initiatives like this shows that you’re ready to take on the responsibility of shaping Moldova’s future. I’m impressed by the dedication and passion you’ve displayed in choosing to be part of this unique experience.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peter Buschmann, Deputy Head of the German Embassy in the Republic of Moldova, mentioned, “The German government supports various projects and initiatives aimed at empowering the youth of Moldova. This support extends to leadership training initiatives and programs that encourage youth involvement in decision-making processes, including the event you are participating in today. This event presents a significant opportunity for you to develop skills that will be beneficial for your personal and professional growth.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The young participants gained valuable insights from workshops focused on two key areas: understanding the functioning of European institutions and honing their debate and public speaking skills. These sessions aimed to elevate their performance to the highest standard while fostering critical thinking, effective communication, teamwork, and strategic planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elena Gladun, a participant in “Model EU Moldova,” expressed, “I decided to join the Model EU Moldova initiative to meet fascinating and driven people who share my passion for everything related to the European Union. I’ve previously taken part in other Model EU events, where I always gained new insights into the EU and its institutions.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Model European Union” is an initiative aimed at simulating the decision-making process within the most significant European institutions. The 80 participants replicated the workings of the European Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative took place for the first time in the Republic of Moldova and was organised with the financial support of the European Union and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany, within the framework of the “EU4Youth: Youth Engagement and Empowerment” project, implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ Moldova), in collaboration with the EU NEIGHBOURS east program, the National Youth Council of Moldova (CNTM), and the EU Information Center in Chi\u0219in\u0103u \u2013 Europe Caf\u00e9. The event occured within the context of the “European Year of Competences,” aiming to encourage young people to engage in the decision-making process.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
