Bilateral relations have intensified significantly, culminating in the opening of negotiations under Cluster 1 \u2013 \u201cFundamentals.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The accession timeline has been supported by concrete actions:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>July 2016:<\/strong> The Association Agreement and the DCFTA (Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area Agreement) enter into force.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>March\u2013June 2022: <\/strong>Moldova submits its application for EU membership and obtains candidate country status.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>June 2024\u2013September 2025:<\/strong> The screening process begins following the first Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) and is successfully completed one year later.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>June 2026: <\/strong>The second IGC takes place, officially opening negotiations under Cluster 1 \u2013 \u201cFundamentals.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Growth Plan and Economic Impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The European Union is Moldova\u2019s largest trading partner, investor, and donor. In 2025, nearly 70% of the country\u2019s exports were directed to EU markets. In addition, on 6 October 2025, Moldova joined the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), making euro transfers between the EU and Moldova faster, simpler, and less costly through participating SEPA banks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Development is being supported through the Economic Growth Plan (2025\u20132027), worth \u20ac1.9 billion \u2014 a record autonomous support package expected to leverage an additional \u20ac2.5 billion in investments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To date, Moldova has already unlocked \u20ac504 million under the Growth Plan. The initiative supports reforms and investments in hospitals, schools, roads, SMEs, and energy security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Investment, Security, and Solidarity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Direct support (2021\u20132025):<\/strong> The EU allocated more than \u20ac1.2 billion in grants. During the energy crisis triggered by Russia, 1.2 million households received electricity support and more than 700,000 households benefited from heating assistance. An additional \u20ac84 million in humanitarian aid was provided to Ukrainian refugees and host families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Global Gateway:<\/strong> \u20ac1.7 billion has been mobilised for the rehabilitation of the V\u0103lcine\u021b\u2013Ungheni\u2013Chi\u0219in\u0103u\u2013C\u0103inari railway line, energy-efficiency projects, and road infrastructure. More than 8,000 SMEs have benefited from improved access to finance, while nearly 7,000 have received business advisory services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Security:<\/strong> Moldova is the first country to establish a Security and Defence Partnership with the EU. Through the European Peace Facility (EPF), the European Union has supported the modernisation of Moldova\u2019s armed forces with nearly \u20ac200 million between 2021 and 2025. The EUPM mission assists Moldovan institutions in strengthening resilience against cyber and hybrid threats, while EU sanctions have been in place since 2023 against individuals and entities involved in actions aimed at destabilising the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Direct Benefits for Citizens<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to visa-free travel (since 2014) and more than 2,000 Erasmus+ exchanges (since 2021), Moldovan citizens have benefited from the elimination of roaming charges since 1 January 2026 through the country\u2019s official participation in the European \u201cRoam Like at Home\u201d initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By combining domestic reforms with substantial financial packages and unprecedented geopolitical support, the future of the Republic of Moldova is becoming increasingly stable, prosperous, and European.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>June 2026 marks a new historic stage for the Republic of Moldova, which has held EU candidate status since 2022.
