{"id":90378,"date":"2022-05-16T17:26:12","date_gmt":"2022-05-16T14:26:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eu4moldova.eu\/?p=90378"},"modified":"2022-05-16T17:26:13","modified_gmt":"2022-05-16T14:26:13","slug":"ebrd-lends-e50-million-to-moldova-s-largest-bank-to-reinforce-funding-for-smes-backed-by-the-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eu4moldova.eu\/en\/ebrd-lends-e50-million-to-moldova-s-largest-bank-to-reinforce-funding-for-smes-backed-by-the-eu\/","title":{"rendered":"EBRD lends \u20ac50 million to Moldova\u2019s largest bank to reinforce funding for SMEs, backed by the EU \u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Lending backed by the EU will help Moldova\u2019s largest bank to continue supporting the national economy despite war on neighbouring Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>EBRD supports Moldova\u2019s largest bank with \u20ac50 million finance package, consisting of:<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>\u20ac35 million within EBRD\u2019s \u20ac2 billion Resilience and Livelihoods framework for Ukraine, neighbours<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>\u20ac15 million, backed by EU,<\/strong> <strong>to boost competitiveness of local companies<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The EBRD is lending, with backing by the EU, \u20ac50 million to Moldova\u2019s largest bank, maib, to reinforce its funding base in the challenging economic environment caused by the war on Ukraine and enable it to continue supporting the Moldovan economy, focussing on private businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u20ac50 million financing package, signed at the EBRD\u2019s Annual Meeting in Marrakesh by Giorgi Shagidze, Chief Executive Officer of maib, and Francis Malige, the EBRD\u2019s Managing Director for Financial Institutions, is composed of two elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EU is backing \u20ac15 million, that go towards extending maib\u2019s participation in the EU4Business-EBRD Credit Line, aiming to finance investments by small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) into upgrades of technology, making them more competitive and better able to export their products. The EU is complementing the EBRD financing with grants and free-of-charge technical assistance to borrowers under its EU4Business initiative. <a>This loan will contribute to the aims of the Eastern Partnership (EaP) Economic and Investment Plan, which includes a flagship investment that aims at supporting 50,000 SMEs in Moldova.<\/a> Maib, which has been a leading implementer of this programme, has previously on-lent \u20ac30 million under it, supporting some 50 SME clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The remaining \u20ac35 million fall within the EBRD\u2019s Resilience and Livelihoods framework &#8211; \u20ac2 billion pledged by the EBRD to support companies and countries directly or indirectly affected by the war on Ukraine. This loan will strengthen and diversify maib\u2019s funding base. It will support maib in deploying finance to private businesses in Moldova during the crisis caused by the war on Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maib is a longstanding EBRD client, with a more than 30 per cent market share in Moldova. It offers a wide range of services to its 900,000 corporate, MSME and retail clients through a wide distribution network of 58 branches and 86 agencies and digital channels, employing 2,300 staff. Since 2018, maib\u2019s largest minority shareholder has been a consortium of investors composed of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Invalda INVL, an asset management group in the Baltics, and Horizon Capital, an Emerging Europe-focused private equity fund manager. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a id=\"_msocom_1\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lending backed by the EU will help Moldova\u2019s largest bank to continue supporting the national economy despite war on neighbouring Ukraine.
