The Ukrainian city of Sumy has received the first nine of 19 low-floor trolleybuses purchased with funds from the European Investment Bank (EIB). The city received a €4 million EIB loan to upgrade its trolleybus fleet as part of the ‘Ukraine Urban Public Transport Project’ (UUPTP).

The low floors and access ramps will make city travel accessible for the elderly, people with disabilities, and passengers with prams. Each trolleybus is also equipped with comfortable seats, air-conditioning for passengers and driver, USB ports for charging gadgets, and WIFI access points.

In addition to the EIB loan to purchase the new trolleybuses, European Union (EU) grant-funded technical assistance under the project (3.5 million) helps the Ministry of Infrastructure and participating cities implement European standards of sustainable urban mobility.

Ukraine has been the main recipient country of EIB support in the Eastern Neighbourhood, accounting for more than 60% of EIB lending activity in the region.
