EU agrees to begin examining accession bids from Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova

09/03/2022

On  7 March, the Committee of Permanent Representatives in the European Union (COREPER II), agreed to invite the European Commission to present an opinion on each of the applications for EU membership submitted by Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova.

COREPER II is made up of the head or deputy head of mission from the EU member states in Brussels.

The representatives agreed to launch a written procedure for the Council to validate draft letters seeking the opinion of the European Commission.

While the move is technical, it launches the process for Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova to be accepted as candidate countries.

EU leaders will discuss the subject at a summit later this week. European Council President Charles Michel said in a tweet earlier on Monday that Ukraine’s membership bid would be discussed in the “coming days”.
