Moldova: EU activates EU Civil Protection Mechanism due to oil spills in Dniester River, caused by Russia
“Russia’s attack on the Novodnistrovsk hydropower plant in Ukraine has polluted the Nistru, a vital source of drinking water for most of the citizens of Moldova,” EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos posted on X yesterday. “This is a reminder that Russia’s war does not stop at Ukraine’s borders. We stand in solidarity with the Republic of Moldova.”
Romania donated and delivered to Moldova specialised equipment for combating oil and chemical spills and a water management module operated by a team of five experts.
“Operations to collect pollutants will continue and be extended downstream from the two areas where work is currently underway – Unguri and Soroca,” the EU Delegation said.
The EU Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) has activated EMSA’s satellite imagery services to assist in the detection and monitoring of oil spills. The first images will be provided as soon as possible.
