The European Union’s Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, Iwona Piórko, met with representatives of the Association of Women Entrepreneurs of Moldova (AFAM), one of the most active organisations supporting women in business.

AFAM stands out through a wide range of activities it organises, including mentorship, trainings, and projects that help women develop their businesses and become leaders in their communities. The Association was recently recognised by the United Nations, acknowledging its strong impact on society.

During the meeting, the EU Ambassador praised AFAM’s programmes — from digitalisation and mentorship to public-policy advocacy and regional activities. She also stressed the importance of understanding the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs: access to finance, networking opportunities, and certain legislative barriers.

Business associations in Moldova play a crucial role, especially now as the country advances on its European integration path. In this process, EU legislation must be transposed correctly and clearly, and the support of the business community is essential to ensure that changes are predictable and well understood.

“We share common goals — supporting SMEs, developing more gender-sensitive policies, and creating more opportunities for women in business. I’m glad we are working together in this direction,” the Ambassador said.

The discussion concluded with both sides agreeing to continue their cooperation and identify concrete initiatives that can support women entrepreneurs across the country.
