European Year of Youth

Civic activism of young people is an essential element both for ensuring democracy and for the consistent development of human capital. Over the last four decades in the European space, the participation of young people in social, political and civic decision-making process has become increasingly important.

Their participation is a key topic for youth policy in the European Union and the Council of Europe together with many other stakeholders in the practice and research in the field of youth work. Youth participation is a priority in the European Union’s Youth Strategy (2010-2018) and is one of the priorities for cooperation between the European Commission and the Member States.

What is
the European
Year of Youth?

On December 6, 2021, the European Parliament and the Council made an agreement to declare 2022 the European Year of Youth. The Commission will coordinate throughout 2022 a range of activities in close contact with the European Parliament, the Member States, regional and local authorities, youth organizations and young people themselves.

To honor, support and engage with young people at all levels, the European Year of Youth will pursue four objectives:

Renewing the positive perspectives for young people
Supporting young people, including through youth work
Supporting young people to acquire a better understanding
Mainstreaming youth policy across all relevant Union policy
