Bălți-Suceava – a new connection with Romania’s electrical grid
Bălți will be one of the points of a new electrical interconnection between the Republic of Moldova and Romania. The Bălți-Suceava project involves the construction of a 400 kV overhead power line and works at the Bălți electrical substation to connect the new infrastructure to the energy system.
The project has an estimated value of 77 million euros. The funding combines a 15.4 million euro European Union grant awarded through the Neighborhood Investment Platform with two loans: 30.8 million euros from the EBRD and 30.8 million euros from the European Investment Bank. The new connection will provide the electricity system with more security and flexibility, facilitate electricity exchanges with the European market, and create conditions for integrating new renewable energy sources. For Bălți, the investment means modernizing an important point of the energy infrastructure; the pursued benefits also extend to the entire country. The works are to be carried out in 2027.
