EPIC: technical assistance for key road corridor in the Republic of Moldova
A safe and efficient road corridor linking Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine? The EIB and Moldova have signed a new technical assistance cooperation agreement, to turn this ambition into a reality.
The agreement is to be implemented under the JASPERS – managed facility for Eastern Partnership Investment in Connectivity (EPIC), funded by the European Union.
The technical assistance package consists of studies to be conducted in the coming months, to prioritise road sections along the Ungheni – Chisinau – Odesa corridor, for staged implementation.
For each section, the studies will identify options to improve capacity, level of service, and road safety, as well as ways to reduce the exposure of people living close by, to noise and pollution, by moving transit flows outside inhabited areas.
Radu Rogovei, Head of the Transport Infrastructure Department in the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development in Moldova, stated: “Since the beginning of 2022, the EPIC advisory team has been by our side, first to develop our National Mobility Strategy 2023-2030, and subsequently to work on key infrastructure projects, such as the completion of the Chisinau Ringroad. The always approachable, flexible, independent, and accurate way of providing advice has made them a development partner whom we trust“.
Once completed, the Ungheni – Chisinau – Odesa road corridor will be a key link of the extended Trans-European Transport Network, aiming to make the principles of free movement of people and goods possible and practical in real life.
