EU4Moldova: Focal regions programme: Municipalities of Ungheni and Cahul received two trucks for collecting garbage

The municipalities of Ungheni and Cahul as well as the surrounding communities will have access to modern waste collection and transportation services. The local public utilities have received two garbage trucks from the EU4Moldova: Focal Regions Programme. The purchase cost 139,320 EUR, the money offered in financial assistance by the European Union.

The trucks, with the payload capacity of 18 m3 for Cahul and 16 m3 for Ungheni, ensure a high degree of waste compaction and feature improved systems for the safety and comfort of the operators. The trucks are equipped with:

◊ two riding steps and grab handles in the rear for the operators on both sides;
◊ support bars and retractable stairs;
◊ sensors that signal the presence of operators on work platforms;
◊ restricted reverse motion of the vehicle when the operators are on the rear platforms;

◊ a backup beeper;

◊ an emergency stop button;
◊ a dual circuit ABS braking system;and

◊ front and rear fog lights.

Other specifications of the trucks:

◊ a loading device for containers with a capacity of 1,100 liters, 240 liters, and 120 liters;

◊ minimal lifting capacity: 700kg;
◊ the possibility of the manual loading of bulky waste;
◊ air conditioning in the cab.

During the first phase, the new services will be rolled out to:
◊ Cahul Municipality and its suburbs (in the region of Cahul), and

◊ Ungheni Municipality and 11 rural localities (in the region of Ungheni).

As a result of the purchase, Gospodăria Comunal-Locativă Cahul and AVE Ungheni, the companies that provide waste collection and transportation services in Cahul and Ungheni respectively, have grown their fleets of vehicles. The drivers and workers that will operate the garbage trucks have been trained in using the new vehicles.

The EU4Moldova: Focal Regions Programme (2019 – 2024) supports intelligent, environmentally friendly, inclusive, and sustainable social-economic development in the regions of Cahul and Ungheni to ensure a better quality of life for citizens. The program has a total budget of 23 million EUR and is financed by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
