Europe Day and Energy Day marked together in the localities of Strășeni

Three signatories of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy – Strășeni, Vorniceni and Lozova localities – celebrated Europe Day and Energy Day on bicycles, as part of the “EcoEnergy” Velo Marathon.

The participants – over 180 citizens in all three localities – showed this way their gratitude to the European Union for supporting the greening of the cities and villages. In each locality, at the opening of the marathon a discussion was oganised about the environmental values ​​respected in Europe, including  sustainable energy and a clean environment. The starting and ending points were close to the building rehabilitated energetically with the support of the EU and other development partners.

The oldest participant was Mrs. Liuba Șoitu from Lozova, almost 67 years old, local activist, folk craftsmaker and expert in medicinal plants. The youngest heroine was Nastasia from Vorniceni, only 3 years old – she rode in a chair attached to her mother’s bicycle, with her sister nearby.

The “Eco Energy” Velo Marathon, organized consecutively in three localities signatory of the European initiative Covenant of Mayors, was in its first edition and was organized by local authorities in Strășeni, Vorniceni and Lozova, the Association of Journalists for Environmental and Ecological Tourism, in partnership with Covenant of Mayors on Climate and Energy, with the support of the Local Grants Program of the European Union.

The Covenant of Mayors currently has 68 signatories in the Republic of Moldova. It is an initiative of the European Union, which brings together local governments that voluntarily commit themselves to achieving and even exceeding the EU’s climate and energy goals.

The Association of Journalists for Environment and Ecological Tourism from Republic of Moldova is the beneficiary of the Local Grants Program of the European Union (EU) and implements the project “Accountability through information” in Strășeni district.

The Local Grants Program is launched on the basis of the Single EU Support Framework for the Republic of Moldova (2017-2020) under the European Neighbourhood Instrument, through the project “Empowering Citizens of the Republic of Moldova” (2019-2021), funded by European Union and implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ). The project partner for increasing the potential of visibility and involvement of citizens is the Independent Press Association (API).
