Oina game played in premiere on the occasion of Europe Day 2021 celebration

On 12 June 2021, a live Oina game was organised on Zimbru stadium in Chisinau, as part of the European Village. The Oina game was the concluding event of Europe Day 2021. The game was conducted in partnership with the Embassy of Romania in the Republic of Moldova, Oina Federation in the Republic of Moldova and the Romanian Oina Federation, along with the participation of EU Member States (EU MS), representatives of EU funded projects and the media.

The Oina game was a premiere within Europe Day, and it was organised with the purpose of raising the awareness about local cultural heritage, hence the event was widely publicised both on social media and by the mass media.

The event was broadcasted live online and on the EU Delegation social media pages. The event was a real success and has engaged an online audience of over 48,000 viewers during the online transmission.

The aim of the Oina game event was to bring back into the public agenda a traditional local sport that is at least 600 years old and which has been forgotten by many. Oina is a traditional game played both in the Republic of Moldova and Romania. It resembles sports games from other countries, such as the German Schlagball, the Finnish Pesäpallo, the Paume game from France, and respectively the Irish Cluiche Corr. The event also included artistic performance by traditional dancers and musical instruments.
