26/09/2021

On 23 June 2021, the Ambassador of the European Union, Peter Michalko and several other representatives of the EU Delegation to the Republic of Moldova paid a visit to Cahul municipality. The Delegation’s agenda included meetings with local public authorities (LPAs), representatives of civil society organisations (CSOs) and Local Action Groups (LAGs), beneficiaries of the EU-funded projects and students of the Cahul State University ‘Bogdan Petriceicu Hașdeu’. Meetings and discussions with the participants were focused on the EU’s support for the Cahul municipality and communities.

At the beginning of the visit, the EU Ambassador Peter Michalko had a meeting with Nicolae Dandiș, the Mayor of Cahul. They discussed the projects implemented in the region, but also about future opportunities. On this occasion, Mayor Nicolae Dandiș expressed his openness to create a local transparency and anti-corruption council to monitor the use of local resources, following the commitments made at the beginning of the program ‘EU4Moldova: Focal Regions – Cahul’. The Council is to be set up with the support of the EU-funded anti-corruption project implemented by the German Development Cooperation through GIZ.

Further, Ambassador Peter Michalko participated in the ‘EU Talks’ event, organised at the Cahul State University ‘Bogdan Petriceicu Hașdeu’. As of today, the University hosts one of the two EU Information Centres operating in Cahul municipality. The speakers highlighted the results obtained through the support provided by the EU, and the participants had the opportunity to address questions about the EU support and projects implemented in the region. An online conference was also held at the EU Information Centre, where librarians had the opportunity to discuss with EU and LPA representatives.

The ‘Grigore Vieru’ park and the ‘Prichindel’ kindergarten were the next destinations visited by the representatives of the EU Delegation in the Republic of Moldova. Both sites are in the process of renovation with the support provided by the EU via the ‘EU4Moldova: Focal Regions – Cahul’ project. At the end of his visit, Ambassador Michalko met a group of entrepreneurs, with whom he also discussed the results and impact of EU assistance on the business sector, but also on all residents of Cahul region.

In recent years, the European Union has provided Cahul with more than 30 million EUR, funds used for local development, infrastructure projects implementation, modernisation of social services and support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
