Referendum on Moldova’s EU accession: EU urges Moldovans to beware of Russian fakes
The European Union has urged Moldovan citizens “to check the reliability of information sources and beware of fakes” ahead of the referendum on Moldova’s European integration.
The referendum is scheduled for 20 October 2024 and will be held on the same day as the presidential election. A section on European integration is to be added to Moldova’s constitution as a result of the referendum.
In its post on Facebook, the European Union Delegation to Moldova said that “Russian propaganda is getting stronger as the referendum on Moldova’s European integration approaches”.
“Fake information and fake videos of high quality are spreading on the Internet, and hundreds of new social media pages are appearing overnight to replace blocked ones,” the Delegation said.
The EU also recommends reading an article on ‘Russian experiments with disinformation in Moldova’, produced by the EU-funded project ‘EUvsDisinfo’ and available in Romanian, Russian, Ukrainian and other languages.
