Team Europe – leader in providing assistance for the Republic of Moldova in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic

During June-July 2021, Team Europe – the European Union (EU) and the EU Member States – continued to provide the Republic of Moldova with both financial support and substantial batches of healthcare in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thus, on 10 June, the Federal Republic of Germany (Germany) offered an assistance of 9.6 million EUR, which included medical and protective equipment. The assistance arrived in Chisinau via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

The handing over ceremony of the equipment was attended by the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, Angela Ganninger, and the EU Ambassador, Peter Michalko. This aid was provided following the request of President Sandu addressed to the German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Previously, Germany provided the Republic of Moldova medical and protective equipment worth over 1 million EUR to support the medical system and the country’s citizens in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The assistance relay was taken over by Romania, which on the very next day, 11 June, donated a batch of 100,800 doses of COVID-19 vaccines to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. As in the case of German assistance, the batch of vaccines was provided under the Team Europe initiative, through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

The vaccines were distributed proportionally in all immunization points in the country, so that the entire population may benefit.

At the same time, in June, Austria – as part of the Team Europe initiative and through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism – provided support to the health system of the Republic of Moldova, delivering a batch of assistance of 150,000 protective masks.

On 22 July, Romania, through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, offered a new batch of 100,620 doses of BioNTech/Pfizer vaccines. The donation event was attended by high-level officials. Vaccines are essential in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Team Europe – EU and EU Member States – remains close to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the EU has mobilized all necessary resources to provide support to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, but also to stimulate the country’s economic recovery. To date, the Republic of Moldova has received donations of almost 900,000 vaccines from the European Union.
