#16Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.

According to UN Women Moldova data, 1/3 of young women over the age of 15 have experienced physical and/or sexual violence from their partner in the Republic of Moldova. Less than 40% of women experiencing violence seek help of any kind.

It is a problem that needs the involvement of the whole society to be solved. To make the voices of girls and women heard, and to involve as many organizations as possible in the fight against gender-based violence, the Delegation of the European Union in Moldova joined the campaign initiated by UN Women Moldova.

The EU delegation in Moldova came with a series of messages from 13 team members, to support the idea of the campaign initiated by UN Women Moldova.

Jānis Mažeiks, EU Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova: “I am honoured to join the #16DaysOfActivism against Gender-Based Violence against Women and Girls. As EU Ambassador, I stand firmly in solidarity with those affected and amplify the call to #OrangeTheWorld. The colour orange symbolizes a brighter future, free from violence against women and girls, and serves as a key tool to unify our efforts globally. The 16 Days Campaign, running from 25 November to 10 December, spotlights the pervasive breach of human rights represented by violence against women. Let’s work together to break the silence, challenge stereotypes, and create a society where women can thrive without fear. Your voice matters, and together, we can build a world that upholds the rights and dignity of every individual.”

Lina Botnaru, Communication Programme Manager, EU Delegation: “I join the #16DaysofActivism campaign because I strongly believe that no woman or girl should experience violence or abuse. I join the campaign because I want my daughters to live in a society free of abuse. I hope for a better European future where everybody has equal rights.”

Jan Demidovits-Mekelainen, Programme Manager, EU Delegation: “From November 25 to December 10, we unite to raise awareness and take action against gender-based violence. Let’s work together to create a world where women and girls are safe and respected.”

The #16Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign aims to promote human rights and freedoms, motivate as many people as possible to say there is #NoExcuse for gender-based violence, call for support and investment in rights organizations women, and fight against gender stereotypes that contribute to a culture of violence against women and girls, both online and offline.
