The regional market in Colibași was developed and modernised with the support of the EU and UNDP Moldova
The regional market “Cu drag de Colibași”, modernised with the support of the European Union and UNDP, was inaugurated on 17 June 2024. The market is available to all producers in the Cahul – Giurgiulești road section and its proximity to the national route is favourable for commercial transactions and contributes to increasing the income of local producers.
The works, worth more than €200,000, included the construction of an indoor and outdoor hall, landscaping and six rustic huts, installation of indoor and outdoor networks (water and sewerage, ventilation, electricity supply, etc.). The budget was covered by the “EU4Moldova: Focal regions”, funded by the EU and implemented by UNDP and UNICEF, and from the contribution of the Colibași City Hall.
“With the support of the EU we have managed to improve the welfare of the inhabitants of the Lower Prut Meadow micro-region by providing a modern infrastructure for a market for both local and regional producers and potential buyers of goods produced in the region. So, we will manage to boost the development of the local economy,” said Ion Dolganiuc, Mayor of Colibași village.
The modernization of the regional market aims to accelerate local economic development and create favourable conditions for local producers to sell their products at the local market. Now, more than 90 traders will sell their products at stalls and at least 28 vendors will sell dairy products, eggs, meat in specially arranged spaces in the hall. And local folk craftspeople will display their products in the six rustic houses set up.
“For us, people from Colibași, it is a great satisfaction to see a modern and attractive commercial market in our locality, which provides the necessary spaces for commercialisation and thus we hope that we will have the possibility to earn a living, so as to support our families here at home,” noted Elena Cojan, local producer.
Also, with EU and UNDP support, parking spaces were provided and access ramps were built for disabled people and parents with prams.
The works on the construction of the regional market “Cu drag de Colibași” took place between September 2022 and July 2023.
“EU4Moldova: Focal regions” programme (2019-2024) supports smart, inclusive, and sustainable socio-economic development in the Cahul and Ungheni regions to bring a better quality of life to citizens. The programme has a total budget of €23 million, is financed by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
