Cold season new financial assistance programmme for vulnerable households of Moldovans and Ukrainian refugees

24/01/2025

The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, in partnership with People in Need and with financial support from the European Union, announces a new initiative: “Winter Financial Assistance for Vulnerable Households of Moldovans and Ukrainian Refugees”. This partnership will run from January to March 2025. It will support households in the Republic of Moldova, including Ukrainian refugees, under temporary protection. It will provide financial compensation to mitigate the impact of the energy crisis, especially during the cold season.

In this regard, a new annexe to the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection and People in Need Moldova has been signed.

This measure will help cover increased living costs caused by the energy crisis; it will use funds allocated by People in Need and the European Union.

The total budget for the support programme is €700,000, which will be provided as nominative compensation to support the established categories of recipients.

This initiative testifies to the commitment of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection and People in Need Moldova to support the most vulnerable groups in the Republic of Moldova through strengthened social protection and solidarity in the face of the energy crisis.

The initiative was made possible thanks to contributions from People in Need funds, resources from the SOS Ukraine Appeal—donations from the Czech people—, and European Union funding.

EU Solidarity with Moldova

The EU has mobilized special support measures, which include:

  • €240 million in direct budget support for Moldova’s most vulnerable consumers amid the energy crisis.
  • Over €66 million in humanitarian assistance to support vulnerable Ukrainian refugees & families hosting them in Moldova.
