The European Union is the Republic of Moldova’s main export market for IT services, with exports exceeding €285 million in 2025
The European Union (EU) remains the most important export market for IT services from the Republic of Moldova, with exports worth more than €285 million in 2025. Almost 40% of all IT services exported by Moldovan companies went to the European market. Romania, Germany and Belgium are the main EU destinations, according to data provided by the National Bank of Moldova (NBM).
Exports of IT services from the Republic of Moldova to the EU’s 27 Member States have continued to grow in recent years, reaching €285.5 million in 2025, compared with €238.7 million in 2024 and approximately €198 million in 2023. In 2025 alone, the value of IT services exported to the EU increased by almost 20% compared with 2024. Compared with 2023, the increase exceeded 44%, confirming the upward trend in Moldovan IT service exports to the European market.
The growth is even more pronounced when data over a longer period are analysed. In 2020, exports of IT services to the EU amounted to approximately €91 million. Five years later, their value had more than tripled, reaching over €285 million. These figures reflect the strengthening of trade relations between the Republic of Moldova and the EU in an economic sector that does not depend on the export of physical goods, but rather on service provision, professional skills and companies’ ability to work with international partners.
Almost 40% of Moldova’s IT exports go to the EU
In 2025, the Republic of Moldova’s total exports of computer services amounted to approximately €742.7 million, compared with €615.4 million in the previous year. This represents an annual increase of almost 21%. Of this total, 38.4% consisted of exports to EU Member States. This share has remained relatively stable in recent years, fluctuating between approximately 36% and 40%, demonstrating that the European market continues to account for the largest share of Moldovan IT exports. Thus, when the 27 EU Member States are considered collectively, the EU represents the largest market for these services.
At the same time, Moldovan companies also export computer services to other major international markets, including the United States of America (USA), the United Kingdom and Switzerland. According to the available data for 2025, exports to the USA amounted to approximately €237.4 million, those to the United Kingdom totalled €108.6 million, and exports to Switzerland reached €29.3 million. This geographical distribution shows that Moldova’s IT sector is strongly oriented towards foreign markets, particularly the European market, but also markets beyond Europe.
Romania, Germany and Belgium are the main European destinations
Among EU Member States, Romania ranks first as a destination for IT services exported from the Republic of Moldova. In 2025, exports to the Romanian market reached approximately €64.3 million, accounting for more than one-fifth of total IT services exported to the EU. Germany ranked second, with exports of approximately €55.2 million, followed by Belgium, with €28.2 million.
Together, these three countries accounted for almost €148 million in Moldovan IT exports, representing more than half of the total value of computer services delivered to the EU in 2025. Other important EU destinations include Cyprus, with approximately €18.9 million, the Netherlands, with €18.4 million, Ireland, with €17.3 million, and Italy, with €14.3 million.
Computer services from the Republic of Moldova also reach France, Spain, Poland, the Baltic states and other EU Member States. The presence of Moldovan companies across multiple European markets highlights the geographical diversification of exports and their access to clients in economies of different sizes and profiles.
Exports to the EU continue in 2026
Data available for the first quarter of 2026 indicate that exports of IT services to the EU remain at a high level. Between January and March 2026, for example, the Republic of Moldova exported computer services worth €69.9 million to EU Member States, compared with €68.9 million during the same period of the previous year. Globally, Moldovan IT service exports reached €184.1 million in the first quarter of 2026, up from €176.4 million recorded in the first three months of 2025.
Romania remained the leading EU destination, with exports worth €15.6 million in the first quarter of this year. Germany followed with approximately €10 million, while Belgium accounted for €8.3 million. Although these figures cover only the first three months of the year, they indicate continuity and strengthening of the Moldovan IT sector’s trade relations with the European market.
The European market, an important partner for Moldova’s IT sector
The increase in exports to the EU comes amid broader growth in Moldova’s IT service exports. Between 2020 and 2025, their total value rose from €226.7 million to more than €742 million, more than tripling over a five-year period. For companies in the Republic of Moldova, the European market represents an important development opportunity, providing access to clients, business partners and projects across the 27 Member States.
At the same time, export trends show that IT services are an area in which the Republic of Moldova actively participates in international trade, making use of locally developed skills and services. Maintaining and expanding access to foreign markets, including the EU, remains important for the development prospects of the IT sector and the diversification of Moldova’s economy.
