Learn more about the films participating in the Month of European Film 2023 in Chisinau

Join us in discovering European culture and European cinema during the Month of European Film. From November 3, 2023, the Cineplex Loteanu will screen five films that won at the Cannes, Berlin, Sarajevo and Locarne and Sundance festivals. We invite you to learn more about each of them.

The French dramatic thriller Anatomy of a Fall, directed by Justine Trieu, won the Palme d’Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. The film is based on a screenplay by Justine Trieu and Arthur Harari. Actress Sandra Hüller played the role of a writer accused of her husband’s death, who is trying to prove her innocence.

The Spanish drama 20,000 Species of Bees was directed by Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren. She also wrote the script for the film. The film won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 2023. This is the Spanish director’s debut feature film and tells the story of eight-year-old Lucia, who is trying to define her identity. The role of the main character in this film was played by Sofia Otero. At the age of nine, the girl managed to win the prize for best actress at the Berlinale.

The Georgian film Blackbird Blackbird Blackberry was awarded the Best Film Award at the Sarajevo Film Festival in 2023. The full-length feature film, directed by Elene Naveriani, introduces viewers to the story of 48-year-old Etero from a remote Georgian village. A woman tries to find her way to happiness despite the prejudices of society.

Lithuanian director Maria Kavtaradze’s romantic drama Slow won the Directing Award at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. The script for the film was written by Maria Kavtaradze herself. The love story of dancer Elena and sign language interpreter Dovydas unfolds on the screen in front of the audience. Their couple’s relationship debunks stereotypes and society’s conventional ideas about what should happen between lovers.

Romanian director Radu Jude’s film “Nu aștepta prea mult de la sfârșitul lumii” received the Special Jury Prize at the 2023 Locarno Film Festival. The script for the joint Romanian-Croatian-French-Luxembourg film was written by Radu Jude himself. The main role in this black comedy was played by Ilinca Manolache. Her character is an employee of a multinational company who has to find heroes for a short promotional video about workplace safety in Bucharest.
