More than 10 thousand children, young people and their parents celebrated in Cahul the results of the “EU4Moldova: Focal Regions” by participating in the “EU4Cahul Marathon – Run for Every Child” and attending an exceptional concert.

The event was organized by Cahul Mayoralty with the support of the “EU4Moldova: Focal Regions” Programme, funded by European Union and implemented by UNDP Moldova and UNICEF Moldova.

The running race “EU4Cahul Marathon – Run for Every Child” is at its second edition in Cahul. Around 400 runners from all over the country came to the starting line and tested their resistance on five and 10-km distances.

On Independence Square, visitors discovered local artisans and businesses, participated in intellectual and societal games organized by the Young European Ambassadors, watched the performance of local talents and the Romanian artist Smiley, and spent time with family and friends.

The event in Cahul was organized under the “EU4Moldova: Focal Regions” (2019-2024) Programme, funded by European Union and implemented by UNDP Moldova and UNICEF Moldova. Interventions supported by UNICEF are contributing towards improving access to quality child and adolescent friendly social services within a child-friendly modern social infrastructure delivered by a well-trained social workforce. “Cahul Municipality is a beneficiary of financial assistance from the European Union in various fields – education, health, infrastructure, economic development – for which we are grateful. The celebration of Europe Day and the respect for the symbols of the EU are an integral part of our European journey”, said Nicolae Dandiș, Mayor of Cahul Municipality, at the official opening.

“Europe Day is a day to celebrate peace and unity throughout Europe. As the first anniversary of “EU candidate country status” approaches, we congratulate Moldovans as their country has chosen the European path. The path of reforms for the inviolability of the human dignity, the path of respecting fundamental freedoms of its citizens. Moldova has chosen democracy and the rule of law. Solidarity is the pillar that unites people, countries, and continents. Solidarity is about humanity. In the spirit of solidarity, we invite all Moldovans to join us at Europe Day events throughout the country; together, we are stronger!” said Jānis Mažeiks, Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova, on the occasion of various events across the country dedicated to Europe Day.

“The Cahul region has grown significantly in the last three years with the valuable support of the European Union. Under the “EU4Moldova: Focal Regions” Programme, UNICEF has been able to extend its outreach to children, young people, and their families residing in the Cahul and Ungheni to enhance their access to essential social services. Since 2019, we have provided them with opportunities for inclusive education, modern healthcare services that fit their unique needs, development programs, and a platform to have their voices heard in local decision-making processes. Congratulations to all the people of the Cahul region for contributing to positive change in their community,” said Jana Midoni, Education Officer at UNICEF Moldova.
