The EU Delegation had an official visit to the Transnistrian region
The EU Ambassador and team from the EU Delegation visited the Transnistrian region, engaging with communities, schools, and enterprises, reaffirming the European Union’s strong commitment to dialogue, stability, and peace.
During the visit, Ambassador Jānis Mažeiks was in Rîbniţa, where he met with students and teachers at the Romanian-language school “Evrika” and the Russian-language School №10 “A. K. Belitchenko”. He had a constructive dialogue with the schools’ management and teaching staff.
The reinstitution of the original premises of the “Evrika” theoretical lyceum remains essential to creating a proper learning environment and addressing long-standing educational challenges. Education is key to building a brighter European future together.
During his visit to one of the biggest enterprises in the region, Moldovan Metallurgical Plant (MMZ), the EU Ambassador Jānis Mažeiks saw first-hand that operations remain halted due to the ongoing energy crisis, especially after Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in November 2024. Together with his colleagues, he also met with the management to discuss the company’s ability to adapt and operate in a liberalized energy market.
The EU Ambassador and the EU Delegation’s team had a meeting with the de facto leader, Vadim Kranoselski, in Tiraspol. Topics of discussion were the energy and economic crisis, the Transnistrian settlement process as well as the human rights situation in the region.
The visit in the region also highlighted the EU’s emergency aid package of 20 million EUR for the left bank, provided at the beginning of February – tangible proof of the EU’s commitment to supporting people in the region.
A further 60 million EUR remains available, but its disbursement depends on concrete progress in human rights, fundamental freedoms, and fair energy pricing.
The European Union stands ready to support, but reforms must move forward.
