Let All of Us Say NO to Torture in Moldova: Civil Society against Torture

Seminar on “Prevention of torture and ill-treatment” at Temporary Placement Center for People with Disabilities in Balti

On February 21, 2020 the Temporary Placement Center for People with Disabilities in Balti (adults) hosted a seminar to prevent the phenomenon of torture. 20 nurses and medical sisters participated in the activity. The briefing was conducted within the project “Let All of Us Say NO to Torture in Moldova: Civil Society against Torture”, implemented by the Institute for Democracy, the Media Center and the National Institute of Women of Moldova “Equality”, with the financial support of the European Union. The activity aimed to inform the employees regarding the term “torture” and “ill-treatment”, the provisions of art. 1661 Criminal code, notions about human rights and ill-treatment in international and national acts, rights of persons with disabilities placed in the residential institutions with a psycho-neurological profile, prevention of torture within residential institutions, including the role of employees. Trainers had an interactive agenda, with non-formal education elements, giving each participant space for presentation and debriefing.

A basic element of the training was to present the legislative basis related to this area, but also to raise on awareness of the employees regarding the communication and inter-relationship procedure with the beneficiaries in order to prevent conflicts, ill-treatment.

Seminar on “Prevention of torture and ill-treatment” at the “Alecu Russo” State University in Balti

On February 17 and 18, 2020, the “Alecu Russo” State University of Balti, the Faculty of Law hosted two trainings to prevent the phenomenon of torture. 50 students from I, II, II, IV and master’s degrees participated in the activity. The trainings were carried out within the project “Let All of Us Say NO to Torture in Moldova: Civil Society against Torture”, implemented by the Institute for Democracy, the Media Center and the National Institute of Women of Moldova “Equality”, with the financial support of the European Union. The activity was aimed at informing students about the term “torture” and “ill-treatment”, the provisions of art. 1661 Criminal code, notions about human rights and ill-treatment in international and national acts, the rights of persons in state custody. The trainer had an interactive agenda, with non-formal education elements, giving each participant space for presentation and debriefing. Young people had the opportunity to learn through experimental education what is the “phenomenon of torture”.

A basic element of the training was to present the legal basis related to this domain, but also to raise the awareness of the young people, the future employees of the system regarding the procedure of communication and interrelation with the persons in the state custody in order to prevent conflicts, ill-treatment and acts torture.
