EUROPE DAY 2020

The Delegation of the European Union in the Republic of Moldova, together with the Embassies of the EU Member States accredited to the Republic of Moldova and the Embassies of the Eastern Partnership countries, despite the challenging times caused by the pandemic, organised a series of educational, cultural and interactive events on the occasion of Europe Day 2020 in a unique and innovative way.  We brought to people’s homes such a diverse program broadcasted on radio, TV and online during an entire month.

On the evening of 9 May, when the European Union celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, which laid the foundations of the current EU, the audience enjoyed a unique concert, performed by the Moldovan National Youth Orchestra and La La Play Voices, with the participation of about 200 musicians from the Republic of Moldova and the European Union.

The programme continued throughout the month with online events for everyone, which highlighted the cooperation between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova.

Europe Day on TV and radio

The Ambassadors of the EU Member States accredited to the Republic of Moldova attended a series of programmes hosted by five partner radio stations and seven TV stations. The broadcasts covered a wide range of topics such as the history of the European Union, cooperation between the EU and the Republic of Moldova, the EU assistance programmes that the country benefits from to the bilateral relations between the Republic of Moldova and the EU Member States. Viewers and listeners were able to learn about the European course of the EU Member States, the major challenges they faced before and after accession, the lessons learned and, respectively, the good practices that the Republic of Moldova could take over in order to faster align national legislation with the European one and reach the standards of living of the European Union. Increased attention has been paid in all TV and Radio programmes to the EU support in the context of the coronavirus pandemic, when immediate solidarity has been crucial.

European film and culture Festival

20 feature and documentary films, animations and concerts were carefully gathered from the EU Member States and Eastern Partnership countries and offered to the general public to learn more about European cinema and culture.

The virtual European village

This time, the traditional outdoor village has opened its doors through interactive activities in the online environment. Thus, from children to grownups, the spectators enjoyed dedicated activities – educational and culinary shows, sports and interactive sessions for parents and children, a webinar on emotional balance during the crisis, as well as a virtual photo exhibition with Soroca Fortress. The activities of the Virtual European Village culminated in a drawing and poetry competition for children and young people, with the winners to be announced in July.

Closer to heatlh care workers and citizens of the Republic of Moldova

Starting with 20 May until the beginning of June, the National Association of Restaurants and Hotels of the Republic of Moldova managed to bring more than 2000 warm lunches, cooked by its member restaurants, to the doctors from the regions of the country, who fight every day for the health of the people affected by COVID-19.

Thus, the resources planned for the traditional reception dedicated to Europe Day, were redirected to those who really needed our support: doctors and the local restaurants industry.

The European Union remains close to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova!

The events were organized under the motto “Europe Day 2020: Stronger together! Solidarity for Health!”, by the EU project “Visibility of EU and EU assistance in the Republic of Moldova in 2020”, implemented by Particip GmbH, in partnership with the EU project „Strategic Communication and Media Support in the Republic of Moldova”, implemented by Commwithus.
