A Conversation About Europe’s Future with Roberta Metsola and Maia Sandu
Moldova is getting closer to the European Union, and young people are actively engaging in this European journey. Pupils of “Spiru Haret” Theoretical Lyceum in Chișinău had the unique opportunity to take part in a dialogue with Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, and Maia Sandu, President of the Republic of Moldova.
Roberta Metsola and Maia Sandu answered the students’ questions, focusing on the education and development opportunities that the EU offers to the new generation of future professionals.
Encouraged by this exchange, the students discussed, debated, and learned firsthand what EU membership means, what European values stand for — freedom, solidarity, democracy — and what Moldova itself can bring to the European family.
Both leaders shared stories from their school and university years, explaining that their motivation to enter politics came from a strong desire to make a difference in their countries. Roberta Metsola recalled how, at just 18, she dreamed of seeing Malta join a united Europe — a dream that became reality, with Moldova now following the same path.
The students also learned about numerous EU-funded education and development opportunities — from Erasmus+ programmes to projects that foster collaboration and exchanges. Roberta Metsola’s own Erasmus experience inspired many to explore the world and their potential with the EU’s support.
The final message was clear: Moldova belongs to the European family, and the voice of youth is essential in shaping this shared journey.
The event took place on 7 November 2025, during Roberta Metsola’s official visit to Chișinău. The EU Talk was organised as part of the EU Talk format — an open dialogue platform connecting EU representatives with citizens of the Republic of Moldova.
