A new batch of medical and sapper equipment was delivered to the National Army under the European Peace Facility

On this occasion, a ceremony was organized in the “Codru” Sapper Battalion from Negresti, which was attended by the leadership of the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff, representatives of the European Union, the Central Agency for Project Management in Lithuania, the ambassador of the European Union in the Republic Moldova, Janis Mazeiks, and the corps of military attachés.

The Minister of Defense of the Republic of Moldova, Anatolie Nosatîi, highlighted the importance of the assistance received for strengthening the defense capabilities of our country. “The second equipment batch received under the European Peace Facility demonstrates that the European Union supports us in achieving the goal of the National Army modernization. It will be used to ensure the efficient activity of the engineering and medical subdivisions of the National Army, which will increase our capabilities to provide the necessary support to public authorities in crisis management,” said Anatolie Nosatîi.

Thus, the official thanked to all those who contributed to the realization of this project and the facilitation of the delivery process of the equipment to the National Army. The Minister of Defense also expressed his gratitude to the actors involved in the implementation of the other projects carried out in the context of the EPF, intended for the development of the defense capabilities of Moldova and the increase of national resilience to hybrid threats.

The European Commission’s Head of the Service for Foreign Policy, Peter M. Wagner, mentioned that the excellent collaboration between the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Moldova and the European Union is one of the examples of a long-term partnership between the EU and Moldova.”

The Ambassador of the EU Delegation to the Republic of Moldova, Jānis Mažeiks, mentioned: “Our support reflects the unwavering commitment to maintaining security and stability in the region, but also the EU’s efforts to strengthen the security and defense institutions of the Republic of Moldova”.

The director of the Central Project Management Agency of Lithuania, Lidija Kašubienė, appointed as the implementer of the first assistance project for Moldova under the EPF, welcomed the successful implementation of the project, appreciating the consolidated efforts of all actors in its implementation.

It should be noted that the second batch of assistance within the EPF received today is part of the project intended for the development of the medical and sapper capabilities of the Moldovan National Army approved for the year 2021, with a total value of 7 million euros. It contains drones for terrain scanning, mine detectors, accessories for extracting explosive objects from the ground, protective equipment, sapper suits, medical aid kits, generators, and sapper technology units. The first installment of this project was received in May 2023.

In 2021, the European Union launched the “European Peace Facility” support platform. In that period the European Council approved the first batch of aid for the defense system of the Republic of Moldova as well.

Initially, the financial assistance package was valued at 7 million Euros. Later, this support reached a total amount of 87 million euros. The support aims to enhance Moldova’s defense capabilities by providing the National Army with medical, engineering, logistics, tactical communications, aerial surveillance, command and control, mobility and cyber defense equipment.
